Vincent Munier - Summer Variations - Nikon D3s - HD (720i)

Vincent Munier testing the Nikon D3s during a two-week assignment in Finland and Norway. To shoot wildlife, you must wait. And wait. According to Munier, it is also important to "diminish yourself" by blending into your subject's surroundings. Eventually, he says, the animals may accept your presence. Putting this philosophy into practice, Munier sat motionless in freezing rain to capture images of musk oxen, and hid inside a cabin specially designed to hide his scent while filming bears at dawn. On top of all the cameras and camping equipment, the seasoned photographer also hiked in with several super-telephoto lenses and huge weighted tripods for stable footage. Was it worth it? This film says it all. This is the actual camera footage (note that YouTube is only 720i). Besides the cutting almost no post processing was applied. Several scenes were done using the high ISOs. The bear scene for example was mainly shot at ISO 12800. The lens used for most of the scenes was the AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR. Additionally used: AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR (Puffins).

Afghanistan in RED ONE 4K High Definition Footage

Footage I shot of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan on the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera. I edited this piece together (starting with some footage from my previous Afghanistan clips) as a demo to show the capabilities of this new technology, and how it can bring quality, scalability, and longevity back to combat zone footage unseen since WWII/Viet Nam era. The actual resolution of the footage is 4096x2048: img517.imageshack.us I only had 5 days with the camera in country, the footage has not been color corrected (I think it's best to see the footage before being "treated"). This video was edited off the proxies on a Mac Pro. It is my hope that the DoD shows interest in assembling a specially trained team of service-members to film on this new equipment and provide footage to disseminate back to the public at a quality this generation deserves, both home and abroad. She provides a brief overview of some of the modifications and upgrades to the HV30 over the HV20 model which was rated #1 consumer camcorder in 2007. Some tips Dr. Diana has: *You will need a firewire cable to upload your video to your computer. * HV20 and 30 capture video via Dv tape not SD card. *HV30 uses a mini SD card but only for capturing digital still photographs. * You do not need to use high def tapes for the camera. However, use a good+ quality ie, Panasonic AMQ (AY-DVM63AMQ). * Dr. Diana uses Pinnacle studio ultimate version 11. What makes this one special is the fact that it was filmed, vfx'ed and comped all in just 4 days. It was made as part of the "4 day Film" catagory in the Darklight Film Festival. It follows 4 MMORPG players taking about their online persona's. As they tell their stories we see them go about their everyday lives against the mundane backdrop of city life...but as their Avatars. Recently, I wrote about how the high capacity versions of Secure Digital cards (officially "SDHC") were going to revolutionize the digital imaging market, particularly video. Although there are only some 8GB versions floating around, SDHC cards should reach capacities of 32 GB at some point (maybe by '09 if not earlier). Although several video cameras with SD slots that explicitly support the "HC" variant of the Secure Digital storage specification, are coming onto the market, seeing a combination of SDHC support, 3 CCDs, Hi-Def video, and a 60 GB hard drive in a single camera that comes in around $1000 is pretty exciting. The camera is definitely a prosumer (pro-consumer) model but the question is, at about 8x less than cost of our professional Panasonic camera, can it handle our professional needs. We won't know until we put it through its paces (which we intend to do). But the good news is that the camera is here as is one of its peripherals (for burning DVDs so the HD content — if that's what you're recording in — can be easily archived to DVD).
